Various Artists: Filthy Biz Yo!

Since origin in December of 2008, Filthy Digital Recordings has been on the forefront of the stateside dubstep scene supporting original sounds and many up & coming producers. Year One at Filthy has brought forth a multitude of solid productions to be showcased on the 'Best Of' release. These sounds were inspired across the globe and put many of the featured producers on the map. This LP consists of top selling hits, fan favorites, and deep, filthy riddims from some of dubstep's biggest names, as well as a brand new stomper from Kirkus, 'Uppercut VIP'.

Filthy Digital was our dear friend, Mike 'Honcho' Wilson's dream. Today we continue to keep it alive by setting the standards that we like to call, 'Honcho Approved.' Big thanks to Chefugee, Dodger, Dub-A-Tak, Violet Gray, SymbL, and the entire Filthy family for their continued dedication, hard work, and support. Mike would be proud, big up!

Villem & Madcap : Scratch You Out / Consequence

We're back with our 3rd release. Coming completely different from the 2nd release, so if you found that a little hard to handle with all those choppy breaks realise that we're not a one trick pony. Get listening!!

Villem - Scratch You Out
Harking back to the early to mid 00's liquid, Villem - with tracks due on Utopia & Good Looking - unleashes an out and out roller with great dancefloor credentials. Stepping back from complexity, Scratch You Out keeps things simple with nice pads, devastating sub bass, crisp beats and not a whiff of pretentiousness. A fantastic tune to break up a dark moody set without losing dancefloor momentum thanks to the surging low bass.

A cracking debut on Uncertified from the boy Villem.

Madcap - Consequence
Crusty, techy, danceable, pounding. Adjectives you could use when describing Consequence from one of the founders of Uncertified Music, Madcap. To give you a better idea in case you're left confused, this is tech-laced dark drum and bass with a nice slab funk in the breaks and space age bass effects polishing the tune.

This is a tune which has echoes of D Bridge and Break, as well as harking back to Ed Rush & Optical tunes of old and all the while being wrapped up in Madcap goodness as he adds his own unique touches to the sound.

Once again, we've had the tune mastered by the non-Waves plug-in mastering engineer, Bob Macc @ SC Mastering. For all of your mastering needs, with whiter whites than ever before check this nice link http://mastering.subvertbeats.com/

Rhyan Harden: Night Train / Night Train VIP

With Owntempo Recordings reaching its 3rd year pushing out new releases they are proving more and more that dubstep doesn't have to be primitive wobble music. We believe that fusion is the future so we will constantly push the boundaries of dubstep as a style towards the borders of techno, house and experimental electronical music.

The 22nd release is a nice example of this as Rhyan Harden delivers nice crossover between deep house, dub techno and dubstep. This represents what we would like to hear on parties instead of unfunky brutal filth. I hope that some of you share our point of view. Enjoy.

Don't write off this Czech based digital label because you might not have heard them, there are some true gems here, not throw away stuff at all!

Various Artists: Style Is A Cage EP

After about three years spent pumping fresh blood in the dubstep scene and winning enough respect for that, DubKraft Records decided to approach the end of the decade with a new ethos and a more interesting vision.
From now on we won't address just one scene, but that niche of electronic music lovers who appreciate Bass, Spirit and Character in a track.
The main goal is now only to create intense emotions for the listener, to leave an emotional scar in the best possible meaning.
In order to achieve more efficiently we'll also address more senses by getting support from artists in other fields of creative work besides music.
You will still be able to recognize the DubKraft sound and releases will maintain a certain coherence, but creative freedom will be almost total.
A forming core of eclectic artists will sit at the base of the project while others will join as occasional guests.

We start this new era with our first uptempo release, based on breakbeats ranging 160 to 175 bpm, with minimalistic sounds and infusions from dub, glitch, jungle and techno.
The tracks are already receiving appreciation and support from top cats across the scenes, like Loxy, Gremlinz, June Miller, Migrant, Fine Cut Bodies, Nerm (BBC), Rogue State and more.

To top things nicely, every track gets illustrated by a young and very creative visual artist hailing from Romania, Oana Cambrea, while the title track is made available for 100 free downloads from our soundcloud page.

Dive prejudice free into our work and your time will be rewarded! www.dubkraftrecords.com

Scream Machine, Sick Cycle: Hell's Winter

Sick Cycle have been running some wicked things in New Zealand and dubstep-wise have toured NZ with Excision and have been making their way into the spotlight through the worldwide growing dubstep scene. Here are 3 tracks we are proud to release on our label. One is a remix of metal band Scream Machine--the hardest and darker track on the mix that will get floor-stompers stomping and the head-nodders nodding.

Meet Projekt UMBRA and Dj i.B.M.

Meet Projekt UMBRA

I met with Dj i.B.M. (the initials stand for Imperial Beat Maker) recently to discuss his musical ventures. He arrived dressed smartly from head toe in black, with his trademark Kangol and symbolic key dangling from a silver chain.

Let’s start with something simple, like how you define music.
Music, as I see it and interpret it, is thoughts and feelings articulated through the euphoric rush of sound.

Could you describe for us what you hope to accomplish through your music?
Because I see music as a reflection of common thematic life experience, I hope to inspire others to take risk in their lives the way I take risk in my life and with my music.

What have been your musical influences?
Well, when I was young my musical influences included anything from Prince to The Fat Boys and The Art of Noise to Depeche Mode. My present musical influence is myself. I spend a lot of my time refining and mastering my craft.

What about your favorite musical instrument?
The MPC 1200xl of course—I’m a digital junkie. But I also beat box and have a pair of 12tens, so I dig those instruments, too.

So how did you get turned on to music?
I am self-taught, but I come by my skills naturally. I moved To New York in 1989 to live with my father, who is a musician. I became a roadie for him and then became interested in music from there. But really, when I think about it, this all started much earlier when I was a DJ at the “Bus Stop Roller World” in 1984. I was too young to be out late, so I’d sneak out at night to go do my thing during after hours.
I remember coming home early one morning to see the smoke from my mother’s cigarette bellowing out the window. I knew what came next… the Belt! It was worth the beating, though.[laughs]

I see that on your profile you have listed film soundtracks as one of your musical styles. Are there any particular film score composers you’d most like to work with?
For sure! I’d like to work with Danny Elfman. His style is amazing—his ability to add a cutting edge kind of music to film. He has a unique ear and style. I would greatly enjoy being in his environment and learning the ways. Who wouldn’t want to hang with one of the artists from Oingo Boingo? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OingoBoingo)

Di i.B.M. is actively producing some really wonderful music.

UnitOvOne - Dustin E, Cold Fusion & Jamie D - The Grey Sessions (UOOGREY001)

UnitOvOne Recordings presents The Grey Sessions
New label launch based in St. Louis USA

After a lot of planning and hermitage, the time has finally come for the public launch of UnitOvOne's Drum & Bass label, The Grey Sessions. Our mission is to show that labels don't have to be confined to certain avenues of the music we have all grown to love and can include diversity and all the shades of grey that Drum & Bass has to offer with out compromising quality. With productions from some of St. Louis's own talented producers, stateside artists as well as some international talent, Grey Sessions promises to start the decade right.

Our first release, slated for January 25th 2010, will start things off proper with two tunes from some of our city's veteran producers and deejays.

Dustin E. brings to the table a seizure step neck breaker, Aardvarkcore, filled to the brim with heavy edits and breakcore/idm undertones delivering to those who thirst for the absence of light. Cold Fusion & Jamie D. come storming the gates with Botch, a tech step style song that reminisces of how this century started, humans fearing robots. Growling sub bass, swamp stepping drums, and haunting atmospheres all brought together in one composition that is sure to be a favorite among deejays who miss the old days of the Armageddon era of Renegade Hardware.

A huge thanks go to everyone who has supported us after all these years, we will continue to carry the quality of our events over into our net labels. Grey Sessions will be the first of 3 sub labels under UnitOvOne Recordings, with more to follow for the lovers of techno and fans of experimental/idm.

If you would like to submit tunes to be considered for Grey Sessions feel free to send your best to dustin@unitovone.com or the soundcloud dropbox: http://www.soundcloud.com/unitovone/dropbox

Imperative Recordings proudly presents the "Tru Colourz" LP written & composed by Dexx (February 16, 2010)

"Tru Colourz" is a mixture of different sounds that make dubstep today. When I started producing my main goal was to find something new and catchy. Using feedback from other releases I've been trying to create that heavy wobble sound that most dubheadz are craving for. My most proud produced track at the moment has to be Ruff Rider because it has that edgy mechanic sound to it. Overall I'm happy with all the tunes on the LP and I hope everyone will be as well.

Big ups to Imperative, Mr Sleepz, Reika, H@NX, Samson and the rest
of the Jam Crew!

Adapter Audio is the musical outlet for artists driven to express a unique perspective on the other worldly sounds of drum & bass. Adapter Audio is curated by label chief Radiata out of a penthouse high above the majestic Chicago skyline. The label is proud to announce the first in a series of releases that look to stretch the traditional assumptions of what currently passes for drum & bass.

ADAPTER AUDIO #1
ARTISTS: BRANDON MILES & TRICKY PAT
A/ MIST BORN

AA/ BARE TACTICS

Adapter Audio #1 is a digital release that features two of the most innovative new producers emerging in the drum & bass scene today. Brandon Miles and Tricky Pat are striking out into some very original territory while still keeping the sound aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Mist Born comprises new-wave synth washes and a funky minimal beat which transports the listener to a futuristic zone where drum and bass is a moody manifestation of man’s dark future. On the flip, Bare Tactics is a dirty half-step dancefloor killer. Both tunes are guaranteed to sound just as good in music forward d&b internet radio show or a bass heavy rave for 10,000 punters. This release marks the beginning of a bright future for Brandon, Pat and Adapter Audio.
Tricky Pat and Brandon Miles music is receiving support from leading d&b heads like: Doc Scott, Raiden, London Elektricity, Paul Reset, ASC and Amit.

A genuine trip to your existence. Unable to deny anything, hearing it as it is, riding with a crippled beast on a bike with big rims, without tires. It's a bumpy ride, sitting on the handlebar doesn't feel steady, but there is no sense of fear. This is getting too interesting. A man working with machines creates textures more real than nature itself. This feeling keeps constantly coming back to me, while listening to this record. It tells something about our way of experiencing reality. It's as narrow minded as it gets, like many genres in electronic music that are now dead and sound just the way everyone expects them to sound.

But Skweee is doing well, it's evolving in to various directions and getting more diverse. There isn't any specific drumbeat or bassline that makes music Skweee. You know shit is real when you feel it. This record is. It views our way of experiencing reality from the outside, in a way that hardly anybody would think is possible, for music that is definitely very suitable for dancing.

Riding with this beast is an expedition. Traveling with this creature, that you have taken out of yourself, to see what you're made of. Sound waves act differently in different mindscapes and here's four ones to dive into. And this gets physical. You might stumble across something and grab it, thinking that this is something to hold on to, but when you grab it, it evolves into something else. Maybe there was no handlebar to sit on, no beast to travel with. This keeps amazing me every time I listen to this record. And to hear music that keeps amazing you is rare. Enjoy it, and explore it.

You won't be disappointed.

T2R(japan): undertone(re-edit)

T2R is a heavy weight in Kansai Dubstep scene. Having HipHop and Techno as musical base, he started to produce tracks in 2002. His tracks are played on FM radio station worldwide and he is recognized more in overseas than Japan. The firm and fat bass sound and rich rhythm programming attract fans all over the world.

Organic percussion which regularly used in his songs and oriental melodies remind listeners temples in Nara where he was born. T2R himself actually was greatly influenced by mentality of buddhism and religion; thus his sound is filled with mercy and healing downbeat. In Kansai, he made joint appearances with UK's leading artists such as N-Type, Appleblim as well as Mary Ann Hobbs. He is a regular member of "Dubstep Rude" and has made several appearances in Back to Chill which is held in Tokyo. In 2007, he released "6 TUNES DUB" then he joined Lo-Vibes Recordings owner KK's album "In the Khaos '69" in 2008.

hed:remote presents 'the amyl ep'

"HED:REMOTE":/labels/hedremote is a new experimental label aimed at those on the fringes of techno, dubstep and jungle. The first EP features Hoax (Hidden Hawaii/Instabil), Control Remote (MJAZZ/Modern Dub) & Foniqz (Vibez/Urban Chemistry) with support from Dubstepfm and Subfm amongst others.

Opening track 'Amyl' by Hoax can only be described as a claustrophobic journey into rolling, sci-fi dubstep oblivion while track 2 'Rogue' by Control Remote has one foot firmly rooted in early jungle territory and an ear to future sci-fi grooves. Foniqz rounds of the EP with 'Smudj' which lifts the mood whilst still retaining the 140 bpm rolling aesthetic that this EP reflects and injects some much needed vibes after the sonic assualt of the first two tracks.

EP2 is due out later this month and will reflect the slightly slower, trippier end of the techno and dub spectrum.

Review for Arize - Just Plain Ugly b/w Arize & Hadji - Ogre Tingz

Up for review today we have a tune from an up and coming dubstep producer out of San Francisco that goes by the name of Arize, who brings us an offering called "Just Plain Ugly" b/w "Ogre Tingz." The A side starts off with soothing tremolo G chords and a vocal overlay that gives no clue as to the HEAVY bassline that is about to drop after the intro, this one's definitely not for the faint of heart. On the flip Arize teams up with another Bay Area dubstep cat named Hadji and keeps the heavy basslines rolling. Big explosion effects as well as in your face drums make this a B side that would have no problem standing up in a set with some of the heavier dub stuff that's coming out lately. Highly recommend picking this one up and watching for this newcomer in the future.

Mindstorm's Newest Release: The Invasion (MSRTI003)

Mindstorm has just released his new single "The Invasion" through his Drum&Bass/Dubstep label Mindstorm Records which features two brand new Mindstorm tracks.

First up is the self-entitled track "The Invasion" which features out of this world sound effects and a revolving bassline that keeps the vibe rolling and the dancefloor moving. Much like Mindstorm's first release "Dark Future Music", it's a perfect introduction to the next chapter in Mindstorm's darker sounding productions.

The second track off the release entitled "Throwdown VIP" is a remix of one of Mindstorm's older tracks and it continues to hold the vibe of the release from start to finish. From Hip-Hop beats to broken beats and even more sound effects this is a perfect match for "The Invasion" and another very wicked tune.

Check out the entire release today and more from Mindstorm and Mindstorm Records.

Hypno: Hypnodubs EP

Kári Guðmundsson aka Hypno hails from the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland. For the last several years he’s been producing dubstep full force and has helped promote the sounds of the genre in his hometown in venues such as Prikið and Jacobsen. His expert productions perfectly meld techno, garage, house, bass and a host of other influences; and have been receiving airplay from the legendary BunZero amoung others.

“Elevate”, “Autumn” and “Telescope” are available now on Haunted Audio Recordings. You can check out his sound here: soundcloud.com/hypno or on his myspace: myspace.com/hypnonpyh
This young producer is one to watch!

What inspired you to start producing music and what are some of your influences?
Well what I think that inspired me to start making music the most is my lessons in classical guitar back when I was 9 years old. I would often make short pieces of music for the guitar when I was bored and develop them more into songs later on. Alongside the guitar lessons I studied music theory which is really helpful right now as I’m making lots of different rhythms and chord progressions. I started making hiphop beats in early 2005 (I think) and made a few tunes with Icelandic mcs. Those tunes were mostly made out of samples from from the internet or from records from the flea market. Then a good friend of mine introduced me to dnb which really wasn’t my cup of tea; but a different genre very close to dnb called dubstep really fascinated me. That music was (most of the time) not made around samples so your musical thoughts and ideas were much more exposed.

Some of my current influences include Martyn, Untold, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, 2562/Made up sound, Peverelist and many, many others…

What is one of your best ‘music moments’ (ie concert/show you attended, gig you dj’d)?
I really can’t think of a ‘moment’ but I can mention the great monthly clubnights here in Reykjavik called Breakbeat.is which play all kinds of experimental sounds but mainly dnb..
My best gig, of rather few, was at the latest Airwaves festival. I was playing a live set in the basement of a nice club called Jacobsen on a Breakbeat.is night along with Muted, Raychem, Subminimal, Panoramix and djs Kalli & Gunni Ewok. The night went well and a group of nice people gathered to listen.

What inspires you, musically or otherwise?
Musically it is my iPod to be honest; but otherwise it would be the weather, or rather the shortage of daylight here in Iceland; really fs you up…

Solskala - coming soon to a world near you!!!

2010 will be the year of Solskala... it is written in the runes of the ancients... well, maybe it's not really written but it will be the year of Solskala!!!

Solskala is a UK based global music collective, started a few years back by Martyn Thompson (sax/flute) and Amber McClean (vocals).

They have travelled the world to bring you mellow, wild, ethereal, soulful, sensuous, harmonious, innovative, blissful, trippy, romantic, urban, sexy, sublime aural delights in latino arabica trip-hop dub jazz.

The first release on Digital Tunes is re-scheduled for 1 February 2010... it will be a-w-e-s-o-m-e!! It's big and it's clever!! It's Milonga Funk; tango-esque beats fused with trip-hop / funk to produce a groove second to none... best of all, it's only €4.00 for the whole release!!!

Solskala sound like the kiss that finally moved the soul / loveliness itself / lying on a sun-drenched beach / a hot summer night watching the stars / the coolest grooves ever

This is not out of the box thinking.

This is more like lining up all the boxes to make a tunnel and running through them shouting woooooooo...

Simonoff: Realize it/ Think for yourself

Austria’s Simon/off has been producing a variety of music since childhood. Dividing his time between production, dj’ing and live PA shows, Simon/off views music as a component of life, not just a hobby. Most recently, his 2009 gigs have included opening slots with such notables as El Rakkas and DJ Madd, and Sigha. Floating around in that nether region between, dubstep, techno and house, Simon/off’s music has been getting warm reception across Europe including airplay on Bun Zero’s FOB show and support from Distance, DFRNT and many others. This year is looking to be another great year, starting with a show with Roska in February. {Feb 26 2010 DJ-Set @ COTN w/ Roska Club Niesenbär / Graz / Austria}

What inspired you to start producing music and what are some of your influences?
It goes back when I was a young kid. My brothers and my sister and got a double tape deck including a microphone from my grandfather (rip) and we started to used it to record collages. We took parts from radio broadcasts, vinyls (our parents had a good collection), made our own “samples” with little keyboards and percussions; we just used whatever we could thought about. It was just pure fun.

Unfortunately when I was getting older the school was stealing most of my time .. so I kinda lost this pleasureful playing with sounds. Around 16 I started to play a bit guitar – my brother had some lessons .. and I tried to keep up with him. Around 17, when I started to go to my first raves and techno parties, I got my first software sequencer (Fasttracker) and from that point on my “old” passion came back. We had some really good promoters in my hometown Graz in the mid ’90s. So we had the chance to see a lot of the big names from that time like LTJ Bukem, Richie Hawtin, Squarepusher, Matthew Herbert, to name just few. Jungle and drum&bass was the sound of the hour and I was completely obsessed with it.. I started to buy records like the first Metalheadz Platinum, a lot of Reinforced Records, Warp and Rephlex stuff. And then I started to absorb almost every kind of music style.. later I was working for some years in a record shop which gave my music collection and taste a big turn into jazz + soul + dub + early electronic stuff from the ’60s and ’70s.
So influence-wise I can say there is a big melange of everything in it.. sometimes the elements really collide … it’s difficult to have catchy synth melodies like “Kraftwerk” had in their songs together with “Reinforced” influenced jazzy / broken / dark atmospheres combined in a techy dubby feel.

So over the years beside constant dj’ing i had a lot of different music output. i did a lot of experimental live things.. also a more IDM-oriented project called “winterstrand” together with my brothers. And a lot of small projects which never came to release, or liveshows.

What is one of your best ‘music moments’ (ie concert/show you attended, gig you dj’d)?
Almost all the parties and raves I had between ‘95 and ‘97; in 2005 Autechre live was an just awesome show, and Kode9 and Spaceape this (2009) autumn. For my own gigs: in 2000 dj’ing before (a kinda boring) Bukem and bringing the crowd to a complete freak out with strange, broken and heavy drum&bass was fun!
But generally the “next” gig is always the one I’m looking for, the one where I try to have my “best moment.”

What inspires you, musically or otherwise?
Besides a lot of music like I mentioned before, it’s mostly feelings and ideas I’m getting because of daily life, politics and society -issues, or watching films and documentaries. but in fact I never think about this inspiration thing because to me music feels like being a daily part of my life like eating or pissing ..
Sometimes you have a lot of bad food. Sometimes you are not mindful and you have burned onions and a bitter taste, but sometimes you just have cooked on the right balanced flame .. haha

Mr Hi-Rize: Bungle Jook

Review by Remote view from BeatsBlog:

Strong Like Elephant, Fight Like Tiger

I first checked this beast on a promo for a forthcoming David Barlow dubstep set. An absolute gem, set to make serious ripples on the underground circuit and across d/s sites. From the outset you are going to feel something here, it must have taken a few minutes for the realization of what I was actually listening to to dawn on me, and when it did, BANG! A most original choice of classic golden age Disney samples, set to a hypnotic ’step backdraft, bubbling under Hollywood strings and phat effects.

There is an undercurrent of magic borrowed from all our childhoods, colliding head on with the vaguely sinister flow Mr Hi-Rize has going on that lend the proceedings a future classic edge. All in all a most impressive debut release from the Barcelona based beat maker.

MonstR: TDUBSDIGI008

MonstR a.k.a. DJ Absurd is without question, one of the hardest working dj’s/producers in the French music scene. Having played alongside some of the biggest artists in Grime, Dubstep, and Bassline, MonstR continues to push his signature sound all across Europe.

For his first release for Trenchant Dubs, MonstR takes his usual, club-friendly production technique and magnifies it. “Irieality” is an all-out dub influenced, four-to-the-floor skanker. Wah guitar riffs and organ melodies make this about as organic sounding as a dubstep track can get. The stomping 4x4 beat paired with the speaker shaking dub bassline, makes this a fierce floor-filling club track. “Irieality” has definitely got “party-vibes” written all over it. “Come On Mate” takes the same approach to creating dance-floor mayhem, but substitutes the organic instrumentation for a much darker and twisted pallet. The bassline on this track is so completely warped that it’s difficult to describe. As blatantly dark dubstep tracks go, this one is sure to fit in with any set. There are nice builds and drops to keep the ravers on their toes. The heavy kicks and snares come alive in the mix giving the perfect backbeat to the distorted rhythms layered on top. Perfectly blended and wickedly absurd.
